Bell Wins National DoD Small Business Award ~ March 2009

Bell Helicopter Textron and Control Logistics Inc (CLI), a woman-owned small business located in Lake Worth, FL, were recently presented with the 2009 DoD Nunn-Perry Award for Mentor-Protégé Program excellence at the national Mentor-Protégé Conference in San Francisco.

This is Bell's third prestigious DoD Nunn-Perry Award for program excellence in providing small business assistance with sponsorship and funding by US Army and Navy commands.

The 3-year program is sponsored and funded by the US Army Space & Missile Defense Command (SMDC-RDCM), Huntsville, AL, to provide developmental assistance to a small business supplier by a DoD prime contractor which promotes profitable growth and participation in the DoD supply chain in support of the nation's warfighters.

CLI is a manufacturer of rotorcraft transparencies such as windshields, windows, skylights and chin bubbles made from acrylic and polycarbonate materials and is a major Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) spares supplier. CLI is an approved supplier to Bell Fort Worth and Bell Canada. CLI also provides transparencies to L-3 Communications for the UH-1Y fuselage, Boeing and All-Systems Aerospace.

Mrs. Victoria Cavanagh is CLI's owner & CEO and Andres Budo is President & COO.

The program was recognized for major milestones completed during the second year of the partnership which included a 1-3-5yr master business plan, market segment landscape analysis, a 5-yr strategic product plan, AS9100 quality system certification, CATIA v5 training, laminated acrylic-polycarbonate prototype parts, revenue growth, employee base expansion, an enterprise-wide integrated IT system criteria analysis with recommended service providers and a much needed facility expansion.

Alan Allman, Staff Engineer, is the Bell Mentor-Protégé Program Manager with support from Martin Peryea, Chief Engineer - XworX, the program's Executive Sponsor. Bell's Small Business Liaison Officer (SBLO), Melissa Holland, includes these unique small business programs in the company's Comprehensive Small Business Subcontracting Plan which reports all small business subcontracting activity to DoD by a prime contractor and its supplier diversity initiatives.

Program partners contributing to the success were Ms. Nancy Young, Director , Small Business Development Center - Florida Atlantic University (SBDC-FAU), Boca Raton, FL, and Mr. Brian Rhodes, Executive V.P., RSI, Wichita, KS, an international aerospace & defense sales and marketing firm which represents the protégé firm in the global marketplace.

Congratulations to the team members for achieving such a high standard of national program excellence through teamwork, effective communications, a positive attitude and high expectations.
